Area needs a depth to become volume

Square feet measure a surface. Cubic feet measure the space extending above or below it. Convert an inch depth to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply by the area.

For 100 sq ft at 4 inches deep: 100 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.33 cubic feet. Divide by 27 for 1.23 cubic yards. Use an average depth only when it reasonably represents the whole area.
